COMMUNITY TALENT AT THE LITTLE WHITE CHURCH
TUESDAY, JULY 21ST 7PM
An eclectic mix of music continues the community music series at the Little White Church on Tuesday, July 21. A flute, piano, and bass trio lead off the evening with a performance of Claude Bolling's Suite for flute and piano, composed at the request of Jean-Pierre Rampal. Conceived as a work marrying classical flute and jazz piano, the piece comes alive with the addition of a contrabass able to span the two genres. The original album's cover communicates the fun, tongue-in-cheek nature of this music. Be prepared to tap your foot, alternating between baroque and jazz styles. The trio continues the humorous mood with a selection from the tradition of British music-hall songs. This one features a poem about a wronged miner in the Yukon gold rush. Jane O'Brien recites the poem and Fabio Gutierrez and Ellen Schwindt provide the melodramatic underscore.
Tenderfoot, a band with a versatile alternative-rock groove, brings a set of covers and originals. Paul Nuccio anchors the group with accomplished and nuanced guitar playing. Liza Schnauck contributes vocals with emotional drive and Shelly Donnelly (with the help of the muppet Animal) adroitly supports it all with sensitive drum playing.
Alan Hunt, a solo singer/acoustic guitarist brings soul-searching and sensitive songs to the mix. Mr. Hunt is a troubadour who accompanies himself on guitar with an elegant finger-picking style. His originals have clever lyrics, stories, and humor. His covers offer occasion for deep reflection.
Dana Cunningham and Ellen Schwindt bring a sweet tune to illustrate a little poetic vision about the delights of summer from Hafez, a fourteenth-century Persian poet. Just in case the soul-searching content of the evening threatens to overwhelm the listeners, audience and performers alike will join together to sing Bob Marley's Three Little Birds: “every little thing's gonna be all right.”
